A centrosome is a specialised cellular sub unit or organelle that acts as the main microtubule organising structure in the cell. Centrosomes are implicated in the accuracy and efficacy of cellular division and cell cycle progression.
Centrosomes can be altered in cancer cells with both structural and numeric aberrations. With structural aberrations the centrosome variations appear too large, due to uncontrolled expression of certain core components and this type of enlargement can often been seen in tumours. Numeric aberrations, excessive or even supernumerary are generated by reduplication or cell division failures.
