The extracellular matrix (ECM) is the space outside of an organism’s cells that provides structural support to the cells. In humans this is a defining feature of connective tissue made up of collagen the most abundant protein. The ECM is made up of fibrous proteins and carbohydrate polymers.
Apart from collagen, the ECM is also constructed of Elastin which enables tissue elasticity for example in lungs and blood vessels, Fibronection, proteins that connect cells with collagen fibres that facilitate cell movement and Laminin, proteins that form web like structures that provide tensile strength.
