Lamins are fibrous proteins that provide the cell infrastructure. Lamins fibrous structures appear to enable cells to be both elastic but robust and in aberrant ageing processes the Lamins ability to maintain the cell integrity is impaired.
They are thought to be implicated in aberrations of cellular ageing mechanisms thereof e.g Progeria. This occurs though a point mutation of the LMNA gene which creates a form of Lamin A that cannot be processed in the normal way and accumulates in cells.
