Signal Transduction HLH / Leucine Zipper

In protein molecules a structural motif is a secondary super structure. In the HLH motif, helix-turn-helix, there are three elements, composed as it is by two alpha helices and short strand of amino acids. This motif is found in many proteins that regulate gene expression.

The leucine zipper motif consists of multiple leucine residues forming an alpha helix with a hydrophobic region running alongside.

They are found in proteins that form transcription factors and hence are involved in gene expression.
